COMPLETE: Stone Hill Trail Network Project

Over the last two summers, dozens of volunteers improved miles of trails to some of the area’s best crags.

We did it! Stone Hill now has improved access to 16 distinct crags and cliffs. Over a total of 10 trail days (including our inaugural trail day in 2019), dozens of volunteers worked hard to establish (and re-establish) sustainable, well-built trails to seven areas:

Upper Tier (3-day project)

South Stone (2-day project)

Mikey’s Mussel Beach

Peck Gulch

Bridget’s Buttress

Lakeside Wall

Kooc Crags

The Coalition partnered closely with the USDA Forest Service and Rexford Ranger district to coordinate trail plans. Thanks to Dan and Marcy for being our contacts and collaberators for this amazing and extensive project.

Funding for the project came from REI Coop through a grant from the American Alpine Club. The Cornerstone Conservation grant aims to support sustainable improvements to climbing areas around the country. Thanks to REI for their generosity in supplying the money for this grant. Big thanks to the American Alpine Club for their grant and for providing such an excellent membership service to US climbers.

Thanks to lunch donors who supplied our volunteers with the necessary calories to build, literally, miles of trail on rocky hillsides:

And most of all, thanks to our dedicated coalition and the volunteers who did the work. Volunteers dug the tread, placed the rock steps, cleared the brush and smashed the gravel to make approaches more accessible.Your enthusiasm and strength shows in the trails you built! Now let’s get out there and climb beyond the roadside!
