PROJECTS

Stone Hill Trail Network Project

Stone Hill is deeply in need of ongoing trail building and maintenance to facilitate access to its 500+ routes. Many trails are overgrown and/or eroded, difficult to hike and not designed to last.

The NWMTCC is working closely with the Rexford Ranger District to help plan, develop and build a sustainable trail network at Stone Hill.

THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE AMERICAN ALPINE CLUB AND REI COOP, WITH SUPPORT FROM ROCKY MOUNTAIN OUTFITTER AND THE USDA FOREST SERVICE.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

Main areas for trail development include (but are not limited to): The Upper Tier crags, Peck Gulch, West Shore climbs, Lakeside Wall and South Stone.

  • Trail project days will be scheduled monthly between April 2020 and September 2021 during the climbing season. The project will require 12 days total to complete, depending on volunteer participation.
  • The project aims to create sustainable trails that will last for decades and need very little maintenance. The NWMTCC plans to work closely with the USFS trail managers to establish an area management plan, something it began to develop for the June 2019 Trail Day.
  • For labor, the NWMTCC will continue to draw upon the local rock climbing community, as well as local businesses, programs and schools that have also offered volunteer support.
  • Every trail day we host will be an opportunity for community outreach and networking, particularly with our local AAC section and our REI Co-op. We plan to make available opportunities to learn about and join the AAC by having information tables along with our volunteer sign ups. Through this project, we hope to attract and engage more of the climbing community both in climbing and stewardship.
